Saskatoon Tribal Council Tribal Chief Mark Arcand rejected talk of “winners and losers” following his re-election this week to another four-year term.
“The people are going to be rewarded by all of us working together, and that’s where the Saskatoon Tribal Council is; we’re united, and we work together to help people,” he said shortly after learning the results of Thursday’s vote at a Treaty Assembly of representatives from the STC’s seven member communities.
Arcand went on to note that as Tribal Chief his role is mainly one of advocacy, with a mandate flowing from the Chiefs of the seven member Nations who provide leadership and set direction for the STC.
“I want to thank the Chiefs and Councils of the member communities for their trust,” Arcand said, adding that he was looking forward to another four years of delivering results for the Relatives the STC serves.
“It’s continuing the same work. Homelessness is a big issue, poverty, all the underfunding that goes in our communities. We need the advocacy to build our communities up.”
This will be Tribal Chief Arcand’s third term; he was first elected as Tribal Chief in 2017.
A member of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Tribal Chief Arcand was raised on-reserve by his great-grandparents. He has lived in Saskatoon for over 20 years.
Reversing intergenerational trauma caused by Indian Residential Schools has been a focus throughout Tribal Chief Arcand’s career, with an emphasis on promoting cultural education and supporting families and youth.
