Position: Cree Language Teacher

Job Summary:

To create a high school classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for student success in accordance with each student’s ability; to establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.

Reports to:

Highschool Prinicipal

Job Duties:

  • Develop and implement Nehiyawin Language Curriculum to support the Grade 8 to Grade 12 Cree Language and Cultures Framework.
  • Assist in the development of Nehiyawin Language Curriculum, language program implementation guidelines for student growth and professional learning.
  • Translate and develop resources for classroom teachers
  • Produce resources in a variety of formats
  • Monitor the implementation of Nehiyawin language programs to ensure consistency with community standards.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records, and prepare reports on children and activities, as required by Mistawasis Nêhiyawak policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain order among students,
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question and investigate.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum education degree (B.Ed.) or Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Saskatchewan Teacher’s Professional “A” certificate
  • Fluent Cree Speaker
  • Be able to read and write Cree, either in Standard Roman Orthography and/or syllabics.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, and with other agencies
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Require strong human relations skills and the ability to work with people and students in conflict solutions.
  • Must possess a good working knowledge of technology
  • Must be able to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (CPIC)/Vulnerable Sector Screening(VSS);
  • Valid First Aid/CPR/AED
